The Famous Smile
Leonardo Da Vinci is one of the most famous artists of all time.He was an inventer, a sculpter, an architect, an engineer and a painter. One of his most known paintings are the Mona Lisa or Lisa La Gioconda.
The Mona Lisa has captivated many people with her distant gaze, sad eyes, and gentle smile. It is said that a gentleman named Francesco del Giocondo hired Leonardo to paint a portrait of his wife, Lisa in celebration of the birth of their second child. This is why Mona Lisa is sometimes reffered as Lisa La Gioconda.
Leonardo started the painting in 1503 and worked on it for 4 years. Then he set it aside. In 1516 When the French king invited him to france,he moved there and resumed his work on the Mona Lisa. After 3 years, he finally finished.
Aside from being one of the most famous paintings, Mona Lisa is one of the most reproduced works of art.Andy Warhol painted Mona Lisa in the creation of one of his prints, and Botero reproduced his own version of The Mona Lisa, a cartoon-like oil painting. In 1954, Salvador Dali created a portrait of himself as Mona Lisa.
Part of the Mona Lisa history includes a theft. On August 21, 1911, an artist visited the Salon Carre to admire this painting and found it stolen. The museum was shut down for a week for investigation.French poet Guillaume Apollinaire was arrested and jailed on the suspicion that he was somehow involved with the theft. He accused his friend Pablo Picasso. Later, both men were cleared of any crime. 2 years after the theft, the Mona Lisa was found. Many people believe that Salon Carre employee Vincenzo Peruggia stole the painting and left with it under his coat after closing hours.Vincenzo Peruggia was caught trying to sell the Mona Lisa. The Mona Lisa was restored to the Salon Carre in 1913, where it still hangs to this day, and continues to fascinate its viewers.
